What does your pendant mean?

Howdy friends. I live in the bible belt of the South, Atlanta specifically. This town as you can imagine is staunch Republican, Evangelical, and most are pretty ignorant as our schools rank 48 out of 50 in the US. Needless to say it's not pagan friendly! LOL!

Whenever someone here, looks at the pentacle around my neck, and then asks, what does your pendant mean?... A certain uncomfortableness rises within me. For the longest time, I told them straight up what it meant, that is usually met with serious concern. Very similar reactions to the thread/post about being witch bashed here in our tribe are experienced rather frequently. I usually answer hateful reactions with a line like "Oh hate, how typical of you!"

Another answer that really confuses them is something from their own bibles. One of my degrees is in comparative religion so it's easy to spit their own book back at them... I am the Eastern Star, I am the morning star.

My question for everyone one is this... How do you respond to a question about your star to people who obviously are out to make trouble? The simple answer stating... Well I'm a witch is not what I want to hear. The majority of my contact with these fundies is at work so I must stay cool, calm, collected, and not confrontational.

What would you say?

"Well, if you don't know I can't tell you, sorry..."

"Why do you want to know?"

    "Does it matter?"

"It's very personal to me, I'd rather not discuss it."

BTW I LOOVE the "Hate, how typical" comment...gonna have to remember that one.

I recently got: "-gasp- That's a pentagram your wearing around your neck!" I replied "Actually it's not a pentagram, it's a pentacle, and my husband got it for me as a first anniversary gift." Which is true, and completely shut what might have been an unpleasant conversation down.

I personally use the 'very personal to me' comment a lot, to me it's just none of their business. I have also been known to use the other lines on people who just are obnoxious. It's not that I don't want to talk about it, it's just that I don't find it appropriate at work.

For me, I don't like to broadcast my religion, it isn't anyone else's business. So I don't usually wear pentacles. I do have a necklace that personifies the Goddess taking care of me...but it is a personal thing and it isn't something I explain to anyone unless I know their background and am totally comfortable with them.

I am SOOOO glad that I live in California. I don't wear a pentacle, but I do wear a little figure of the Goddess Kali, and a dragon pendant. While I've had a lot of people admire them, I rarely have anyone ask me if my religion is involved with them. If they ask, I just tell them that Kali is my personal goddess, or that the dragon is my protection animal.

Then again, I live in Sonoma country where we have a lot of open pagan groups.

You could just say something like, "It's an ancient symbol of life." Not precise, but as close as they need to know. The more detail you give, the more hostile they're likely to be. So make as broad and meaningless an answer as you can, and stop there.

I, too, don't generally wear a pentacle, but I often clip my hair with a brass symbol of Freyja's boar....If asked: "My husband made it for me. Do you like it?" If they're a bit more sympathetic, I might say, "It's an ancient symbol of peace, prosperity and fertility."

I tell people straight out what it means.

It is a symbol that represents the four elements and my connection to Spirit.

course, though, I don't wear pentacles anymore. It's not because I deny my past or present. It's because spiritually, I have moved on from needing to wear one. My current pendant is a Turtle with a Malachite cabochon. It represents my connection as a Turtle Islander and the Malachite helps my heart. :)

I live in a very small town that is predominantly Christian...so I am careful about what I wear. I have a couple of pentacle pendants that are so well designed that pretty much I'm the only one who knows what it really is. Mostly I wear Goddess pendants though....and it's funny when people ask what it is...I tell them it's a Goddess...and the most common reaction is "Right on....Woman Power!" And the conversation never goes any further than that. But like others have said...my religious beliefs are very personal to me and it's not something I share with everyone.

I have this idea of making a pagan-themed charm bracelet. For example:

Sun, moon, star, tree, earth, air, fire, water

      or

a charm for each of the eight sabbats

I have a few different pendants... In response to your eight sabbats... I have an eight pointed star that I wear from time to time and you can watch them count. The people here are UBER-FUNDIES. I kid you not, in the middle of a conversation, they get lost, stare at my chest, and you can watch them count with the fingers. The all know the five point "devil star" as they call it, but throw eight at them and you can actually see them short-circuit! LOL!
